Gluten Free at Pizza Hut

Several months ago I shared the news that Pizza Hut had decided to make gluten free options available to their customers. After the announcement, there was a lot of back and forth in the celiac community about whether or not their partnership with Udi’s and procedures would be enough to ensure that cross contamination wouldn’t occur. At the time, I was open to trying the Pizza Hut gluten free pizza, and this past weekend, I had my chance.

While celebrating the Easter weekend in Murphy, NC, I realized that their Pizza Hut was listed as one of only six restaurants in North Carolina offering the gluten free option. I decided to take a chance and try the pizza. After ordering, I spoke with the manager about the procedures they had in place, and she assured me that they take every precaution they can to ensure there is no cross contamination.

So, what’s my verdict on Pizza Hut’s gluten free pizza? Well, the good news is that I did not get sick so I assume that the pizza was ‘safe.’ The bad news is that I didn’t think the pizza was very good. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by some of my favorite gluten free pizza options (Maria’s Italian Eatery, Mellow Mushroom, California Pizza Kitchen, Fuel, and others), but I was not impressed. The crust was thin, the pepperoni and cheese toppings were minimal, and there just wasn’t much to it. Not to mention, there is only a 10 inch pizza option, and the price was $12. I appreciate the effort, but I doubt I will be returning.

Gluten Free at Maria’s Italian Eatery

I spend a lot of time in the North Carolina mountains and always struggle with where to eat during these road trips. Recently I was on my way back from Asheville (where there are TONS of gluten free options) and used my trusted Find Me Gluten Free app to see other options along Interstate 40. One suggestion in Morganton, NC was Maria’s Italian Eatery. It had good reviews posted on the app, so I figured I’d give it a shot, and I’m so glad I did!

Maria’s reminds me a lot of a pizza chain called CiCi’s Pizza where we used to eat a lot when I was little. They have appetizers, salads, subs, calzones, special order pizzas, pasta, and an extensive pizza buffet. Maria’s does not have a gluten free menu, but they do offer 8″, 10″, 12″, and 14″ gluten free crust pizzas at an additional cost of $2.00. We ordered the 14″ Deluxe pizza which typically includes pepperoni, Italian sausage, beef, ham, bacon, onion, mushroom, green pepper, and black and green olives. I’m a meat lover, but I don’t like onions, mushrooms, green peppers, or olives so I asked that they leave those off.

The pizza was excellent. It was piled very high with toppings, and easily rivals the pizza at Mellow Mushroom which is my favorite pizza chain.

I highly recommend you check out Maria’s Italian Eatery for their gluten free pizza if you’re ever in the Morganton, NC area!
