Aldi Live G Free Gluten Free Yellow Cake Mix

Recently the grocery store Aldi started selling their own line of gluten free products called Live G Free. I was beyond excited to hear the news since I live very close to an Aldi store. I immediately went to check out their new line of gluten free products. They have a very wide selection and the prices are extremely reasonable.

This week I tried the Live G Free Gluten Free Yellow Cake Mix.

Live G Free Gluten Free Yellow Cake Mix Ingredients & Directions:
3 eggs
2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup oil

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease bottom only of pan (use paper baking cups for cupcakes).
2. In a small mixing bowl, beat eggs, oil and milk.
3. In a large mixing bowl, combine dry mix, milk, oil and egg mixture. Gently fold together until completely incorporated. Beat well.
4. Pour into greased pan and bake for:
36-41 minutes (8″ x 8″)
33-38 minutes (9″ x 9″)
41-46 minutes (8″ or 9″ Round)
18-23 minutes (12 cupcakes)

The cupcakes turned out well. I’ve found that the texture of gluten free cupcakes and cake is different than that of cake with gluten, and this was true for this mix. The cupcakes were ‘heavier’ than a normal gluten-filled cupcake. Honestly, the consistency was a lot like that of a muffin instead of a cupcake, but they were still moist and fluffy with a mild sweet taste. I think these cupcakes would be best served with some whipped cream and fruit versus regular frosting.

Even though I wasn’t blown away by the cupcakes, I would still buy the mix again. The price is only $2.99 and compared to other cake mixes I’ve tried (including Betty Crocker, Glutino, and others), this is a solid choice. My all-time favorite gluten free cake mix is XO Baking Co., but I will save that review for another day.

Stay tuned for more reviews of Aldi’s new gluten free line!

  1. Hi Ashley – really excited to have found your blog about Gluten Free eating in Carolina, wish I could try the Pizza restaurant, need similar in UK. Will check out Aldi because haven’t seen their gluten free range in UK – thank you for ‘liking’ my blog – Mrs Geranium – mid-life in the Midlands

  2. Hi Ashley,
I haven’t tried the cake mix yet, but it’s good to know that it might be worth trying! Have you tried their brown rice spaghetti noodles? If there’s one thing I miss about eating gluten, it’s spaghetti!! I’ve tried several different brands of pasta but Aldi’s is by far my favorite… and you can’t beat the price!

    • Hi Lindsey! Thanks for reading! I have not tried the brown rice spaghetti noodles yet, but I have tried the penne pasta and I thought it was good. You’re definitely right about the price!

I’ll be doing some more reviews of Aldi’s gluten free products in the future, I just haven’t had the time to write them yet. 🙂
