Last weekend I ate at California Pizza Kitchen for a birthday. It was only my second time eating there and my first experience eating there while being gluten free.
Based on their gluten free menu and my conversation with the manager, there are 4 gluten free pizza options – the original BBQ chicken, pepperoni, mushroom pepperoni sausage, and margherita. Their menu states that these 4 gluten free pizzas are prepared using the strict procedures approved by The Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG), using a certified gluten free crust and other ingredients verified by their suppliers as gluten free. It also goes on to say that any of the CPK pizzas can be made on a gluten free crust for an additional $2, but due to their kitchen space, only the 4 pizzas I previously mentioned can be prepared using GIG’s certified procedures.
In order to be on the safe side, I ordered one of the 4 pizzas that I knew would be safest – the pepperoni. The pizza was a good size, enough for 2-3 people depending on your appetite.
It had spicy pepperoni, fresh mozzarella cheese, and wild Greek oregano, and it was excellent! I appreciated the fact that it did not have a lot of tomato sauce but did have a large helping of the cheese and pepperoni. The crust was nice and thin, almost spongy.
I trust that in time there will be many more gluten free options at CPK to choose from. They seem to be taking ‘the whole gluten free thing’ very seriously. The waitress specifically asked me if I have a gluten allergy, and the manager brought my pizza out separately and waited to see how I liked it.
I highly recommend you check out California Pizza Kitchen‘s gluten free pizza if you have one in your area. I’ve eaten a lot of pizza lately (Fuel and Mellow Mushroom), and I’d have to say that the gluten free pizza at California Pizza Kitchen comes in a very close second to Mellow Mushroom with Fuel coming in third.
What is your opinion? Have you tried the gluten free pizza at California Pizza Kitchen?
