A few weeks ago I was back in my old stomping grounds of Chapel Hill, NC. It had been a few years since I had been there after graduating from the University of North Carolina nearly a decade ago (gosh I sound so old!). The campus was as beautiful as ever although there were lots of new buildings. I guess that’s why they always referred to UNC as the University of Nonstop Construction because there was always a huge construction project going on somewhere on campus. Not only had the campus changed, but there were lots of new shops and restaurants on Franklin Street. When I was a student at UNC, I had definitely never heard of celiac disease and would have had no idea what gluten was so I was clueless as to where would be safe for me to eat. Enter my trusted Find Me Gluten Free app! There were surprisingly more options in the area than I imagined. I settled on a place called Buns which it said was known for their burgers and fries.
They have a nice selection of specialty burgers or you can build your own. For $1 extra, you can get a gluten free hamburger bun. They have both regular and sweet potato fries – both of which are gluten free so I decided to get a mixture of both kinds.
As far as burgers, you can get the angus chuck beef, turkey, or veggie option. I stuck with a single beef patty which was plenty for me, but you can also get double or triple the patties. The portion of fries was especially big, and I ended up bringing half of them home.
If you’re ever in the Chapel Hill area, I’d recommend checking Buns out. The food was great and reasonably priced. I later learned that Buns has been featured in Southern Living magazine and recently won Best Burger in Orange County.
